Debuts New Sun Modular Datacenter Solution with Emerson Power and Cooling
Technology to Meet India's
Rapidly Growing IT Requirements
Complete Modular
Datacenter Solution Designed With Sun MD and Emerson's Power and Cooling Options; Design Innovation Changes Economics
of Datacenter Expansion
New Delhi, India -- November 19, 2008 -- Sun
Microsystems and Emerson today announced the availability of the new Sun
Modular Datacenter (Sun MD) D20 paired with Emerson's power and cooling infrastructure
for a complete modular datacenter solution designed to meet India's rapidly
growing IT requirements. Deployable
virtually anywhere in the country, the Sun MD and Emerson infrastructure are an
ideal solution for Indian companies and government agencies looking to rapidly
expand their datacenter capacity regardless of location.
Based on a standard 20-foot (6.1-meters) shipping container, the Sun
MD leverages Sun's design innovation
to engineer out complexity and provide a rugged, energy efficient and rapidly
deployable solution to meet datacenter expansion and mobility requirements.
Capable of supporting up to 50 teraflops of compute performance or three
petabytes of disk capacity in a heterogeneous environment, the Sun MD is
deployable in one-tenth the time it takes to design, build and deploy a typical
brick and mortar datacenter, at a fraction of the cost. Sun MD, with its
innovative watercooled design, also delivers over 40 percent lower cooling
costs, independent of payload, as compared to a typical datacenter.
Sun has partnered with Emerson Network Powers to launch the
Sun Modular datacenter in India
as Emerson being a leader in Business Critical Continuity, has devised a
Containerized Power & Cooling Solution with the Inherent Properties of
Scalability and Modularity required for
an unique innovative concept like Sun Modular Datacenter.
Speaking on the
occasion, Mr. R. Vasudevan, Vice
President (Enterprise Solutions) Emerson Network
Power India
said, “At Emerson, we are committed to provide energy efficient integrated
solutions for power & cooling that will help our customers reduce operating
cost without compromising reliability. We pioneered the concept of EnergyLogic
that has been hugely successful and has helped customers reduce power consumption
by almost 40%. ”
Vasu further added, “This partnership is aimed at combining the
expertise of both Sun Microsystems and Emerson to provide customers with a
world class solution in the datacenter space.”
Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Peter
Chadford, Director, Sales Development, APAC and Emerging Regions, Sun
Microsystems said, “Sun Modular Datacenter radically changes the way in
which datacenter capacity is deployed. In emerging markets there are many
companies who are experiencing explosive IT growth, but are unable to meet
demand due to infrastructure limitations. We are pleased to partner with
Emerson which is a technology leader in business critical continuity space
worldwide to offer the Sun MD as an appropriate solution not only for customers
who are out of datacenter space and need to add capacity rapidly but also for
those who want to deploy their IT infrastructure anywhere worldwide — or be
able to redeploy to new locations as requirements change. In addition to the
performance boost, costs savings and the eco features of Sun MD, two critical
aspects that I believe will influence a CIO’s purchasing
decision towards the solution is the durability and mobility of the Sun Modular
Datacenter.
“The Sun MD along with
the Total Infrastructure Solution offered via Sun Professional Services enables
companies in India to dramatically increase time deployment of new IT resources
where they want it - not where they are limited by local infrastructure” Peter
further added.
Engineered to minimize energy and space
requirements and maximize compute density and operating efficiency, Sun MD
delivers compute capacity quickly, where and when it’s needed most in roughly
1/10th the time to deploy a bricks-and-mortar datacenter.
Based on a standard 20-foot (6.1-meter) shipping
container, Sun MD is enhanced with up to eight high-density racks, a unique
water-based cooling system, and shock absorption technology for ultimate
transportability. Designed to house a payload of 19-inch rackmountable servers,
storage, telecommunications, and networking equipment, the Sun MD can be
installed permanently or repurposed and relocated to meet ever-changing
business demands. Multiple units can be distributed geographically to provide a
complete global datacenter or disaster recovery solution.
Each Sun MD hosts one 12.5-kW rack for network and
system management equipments and six (D20) or seven (S20) 25-kW-capable
general-purpose racks for servers, storage, or other equipment. This makes it
an ideal platform for the new generations of blade servers and other
high-density equipment that many existing datacenters today are unable to
support due to their limited power or cooling capabilities. With the ability to
power and cool as much as 25 kW per rack and 4 times the density per rack of a
typical datacenter, the Sun MD can also help reduce clutter and chaos in the
datacenter by serving as the ultimate consolidation and virtualization
platform.
The
Sun MD D20 is the new deeper rack model of the Sun S20 and provides customers
with new choices for deploying a broader spectrum of enterprise-class servers
and storage in their modular datacenters. The deeper rack configuration is
particularly beneficial for customers who run larger database applications or
who want to use Sun MD for back up and recovery or other business critical
solutions which require larger amounts of disk and tape.
From the Sun portfolio, the new Sun MD D20 supports systems including the Sun
SPARC Enterprise M4000 and M5000 servers, Sun StorageTek SL500 Modular Library,
and the Sun StorageTek 9985V System. Sun MD also supports a wide range of
third-party equipment in both the standard and deep rack configs.
Since its official, global launch in January 2008, the Sun MD has taken the
world by storm and generated tremendous customer interest. In the last year
alone, it has visited 73 cities on 4 continents and been toured by more than
12,000 customers and partners. The solution has been deployed by numerous
global customers - especially those in emerging markets - for a broad range of
applications in high-performance computing, education, manufacturing,
government, telecommunications and healthcare. The Sun MD is also the only
containerized datacenter certified for regulatory and safety compliance as well
as for fire-suppression in over 50 countries world-wide with installations on
nearly every continent.
The Sun Modular Datacenter is an ideal solution for
customers who want to quickly add
incremental datacenter capacity virtually anywhere,
with the flexibility to reconfigure and move it as business needs change at a
much lower cost than traditional
alternatives.
