Emerson Network Power Helps AT&T Quickly Recover from Denver Service Outage

Challenge
AT&T Corp. is among the world's premier voice and data communications companies, serving more than 80 million customers, including consumers, businesses, and government. When a power system failure late one Friday evening threatened to cause a complete service outage at an AT&T Local Services switching office in Denver Co., AT&T turned to Emerson Energy Systems TM (formerly known as Astec Advanced Power Systems) for an emergency power solution. The power system that failed was furnished by a competitor, but when they weren't able to come up with a solution quickly enough, Emerson Energy Systems TM , a division of Emerson Network Power, was contacted.

Solution
Emerson Energy Systems TM recommended installation of its Emergency Recovery DC Power System (ERPS TM ) at the site to power the load and charge the batteries. Within 24 hours after being contacted, Emerson Energy Systems TM was able to assemble an ERPS at its Monterrey, Mexico plant and deliver the equipment by truck to the Denver site. By Sunday, AT&T had all its customers back online.

Benefits
Emerson Energy Systems TM originally developed ERPS TM to protect power systems from Y2K-related interruptions. The emergency power system provides a universal "plug and play" solution to help a communications provider recover from almost any power system failure. The out-of-the-box solution is ideal when a power system goes out of service due to AC utility problems (such as spikes, surges, brownouts, or AC over-voltage conditions), weather-related problems (lightning strikes, tornadoes, flooding, or hurricanes), or for equipment-related issues (generator-induced harmonics, end of life on rectifiers, and controllers.)

The power system delivers power to spare to maintain a customer's critical network integrity. Its key benefits include:
  • Integrates into almost any existing power distribution system, including Emerson Energy Systems TM ' Helios TM or any other brand.
  • Lightweight and factory pre-assembled; it's both easily transportable and quickly installed.

Customer comments
"Emerson was the only company to come forward with a solution -- an instant solution - that met our needs," says William Fields Sr., AT&T Local services engineering manager. "We decided to order ten more of the ERPS solutions, because if the other guy's power systems fail again, we'll feel confident that the ERPS will be there to keep AT&T online."

"We were very impressed with how quickly Emerson delivered the ERPS. In the same amount of time that the competitor would have sent a technician to diagnose the problem, the local technicians had already put the ERPS online and were charging the batteries," says Fields.

Emerson Network Power Delivers Power Solutions for Nortel Networks Optical Networks

Challenge
Nortel Networks, a global leader in telephony, data, e-business, and wireless solutions for the Internet, is experiencing phenomenal sales of its optical networking equipment that enable high speed, content-rich broadband services. Nortel Networks' optical networking business in 1999 grew more than 80% compared to the year earlier. To meet demand for its products, Nortel Networks asked preferred supplier Emerson Energy Systems TM (formerly known as Astec Advanced Power Systems) to increase the production of its DC/DC power converters for Nortel Networks by up to 250% for some product models.

Solution
Emerson Energy Systems TM manufactures surface-mount DC/DC power converters called Point of Use Power Supplies (PUPS) that ensure clean, reliable power for Nortel Networks' OC-48 and OC-192 fiber-optic networks. In recent months, Emerson Energy Systems TM has dedicated additional plant capacity to meet Nortel Networks' increased needs. During 1999, Emerson Energy Systems TM was supplying 2,000-4,000 surface-mount PUPS each week; this year's production has been increased to 6,000-9,000 per week.

As preferred Nortel Network suppliers, Emerson Energy Systems TM and Astec Power, both divisions of Emerson Network Power, have implemented a multi-year program to meet the company's increased needs for a wide range of power converter products used in its optical networks.

Benefits
  • Astec's PUPS modules for Nortel Networks' optical networks ensure clean power and "high nines" reliability for high-speed, high-bandwidth service.

  • Astec Power and Emerson Energy Systems TM form a true synergy by offering complimentary power systems that create a complete portfolio of end-to-end communications/network power solutions that meet customer needs. The cross-fertilization of marketing, engineering and manufacturing expertise has better positioned Emerson Network Power TM to offer the next generation of power products to all players in the communications arena.
